Job Description

The Senior Legal Officer is responsible for providing high-level legal advisory services and representing the university in legal matters. This role involves drafting and reviewing contracts, ensuring regulatory compliance, and managing litigation processes. Working within the university’s legal department, the officer ensures that the institution’s interests are protected and that all operations align with the statutory requirements of the Higher Education sector and Kenyan law.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert legal advice to the university management and various departments
  • Draft, review, and negotiate legal documents, contracts, and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs)
  • Represent the university in courts of law and before quasi-judicial bodies
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and institutional policies
  • Manage the university’s litigation portfolio and coordinate with external legal counsel
  • Conduct legal research and provide updates on emerging legislative changes affecting the university
  • Maintain and organize legal records and documentation for audit and reference purposes

Qualifications & Experience

  • Master’s Degree in Law (LLM) from a recognized institution
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience serving in the grade of Legal Officer or equivalent
  • Valid Practicing Certificate from the Law Society of Kenya (LSK)
  • Diploma in Law from the Council of Legal Education
  • Certificate in Computer Applications from a recognized institution
  • Demonstrated professional competence and high-level performance results

Candidates should provide three (3) referees knowledgeable about their competence and area of specialization, one of whom must be a recent/last employer. Referees are required to submit their confidential reports in sealed envelopes to the address below.
