Job Description
The Geospatial Data Officer leads the abstraction, cleaning, and integration of complex datasets within icipe’s Environmental, Plant, Human, and Animal Health themes. This role is vital for developing robust data infrastructure that supports spatial, epidemiological, and entomological research projects. The officer coordinates with external data custodians to harmonize datasets and designs training programs to strengthen institutional capacity in geospatial analysis. By ensuring data accuracy and governance, the position directly supports scientific outputs, research proposals, and international publications.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain and optimize automated data pipelines for spatial and entomological data integration
- Lead data abstraction and harmonization processes for unpublished or restricted-access datasets
- Supervise and mentor junior technical staff and interns through skill-building sessions
- Design and deliver technical workshops on geospatial data visualization and research application
- Collaborate with developers to build platforms that enhance the user interface of disease-tracking systems
- Implement data security and governance protocols to ensure high-quality dataset management
- Contribute to the development of research proposals and scientific publications through data manipulation
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Population Biology, or a related field
- Minimum of 4 years of professional experience in data management or bioinformatics
- Proficiency in programming languages including R, C++, Python, and PERL
- Advanced knowledge of big data analytics, data security, and infrastructure governance
- Experience with variant detection tools (GATK, samtools, BWA) and genomic file formats (VCF, FASTQ, BAM)
- Familiarity with bioinformatics databases such as GenBank, VectorBase, Uniprot, and KEGG
- Strong leadership and organizational skills with a self-motivated approach to research
