The British High Commission Nairobi is seeking a highly competent Multi-skilled Carpenter to conduct carpentry and minor masonry works across its Estate in Nairobi. This demanding construction trade job in Kenya requires at least 4 years of hands-on carpentry/joinery experience and 2 years of masonry experience, with a minimum Qualification Grade 1 in carpentry. The Carpenter will perform Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM), reactive maintenance, fault finding, and construction work in residential and office buildings, ensuring a high level of workmanship compliant with FCDO, British, and Kenyan building regulations (NCA).

Role Overview

The Multi-skilled Carpenter will dedicate 65% of their time to carpentry and 25% to minor masonry works, with a strong focus on Health and Safety Compliance. Key carpentry duties include complex trim work, hanging doors, and operating woodworking machines, while masonry duties involve minor repairs and restoration. The role is highly hands-on, requiring the ability to read blueprints, erect scaffolding safely, and consistently apply best practices in construction excellence.


Roles and Responsibilities

  • Carpentry Duties (65%): Carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM), projects, and reactive maintenance. Execute repairs and construction work safely, ensuring compliance with British standards and Kenyan building regulations (NCA).
  • Specialized Carpentry: Proficiently execute stain-grade trim work, hang doors, set door hardware and windows; set up and operate woodworking machines for various operations.
  • Safety & Tools: Safely erect and inspect scaffolding (up to 3 meters); maintain all equipment in a clean and serviceable condition, ensuring safe storage of tools and materials.
  • Masonry Duties (25%): Carry out minor masonry works, including repairs to broken ridges, sealing valley gaps, and restoring old masonry.
  • Documentation: Read and understand work orders, blueprints, and technical drawings; produce specific method statements and risk assessments for tasks.
  • Health & Safety (10%): Actively contribute to safe working practices, complying with risk assessments and site safety orders; working at height is essential.
  • Maintenance Scope: Typical duties include routine building maintenance, construction of small projects, path construction, and undertaking building constructions/modifications in residential and office buildings.

Essential Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Experience: At least 4 years of hands-on carpentry, joinery, and cabinetry work experience, and at least 2 years of hands-on masonry work experience.
  • Certification: Minimum Qualification Grade 1 in carpentry and joinery and Qualification Grade 3 in masonry.
  • Technical: Ability to read and understand blueprints; proficiency in using power and manual tools.
  • Logistics: Holder of a valid drivers’ license with at least 3 years clean driving record.
  • Skills: Good communication skills, attention to detail, initiative, customer service skills, and a flexible team-working approach.
  • IT Literacy: IT / Computer literate, familiar with Microsoft software (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel).
