General Foreman — British High Commission Nairobi (Nairobi)

The British High Commission Nairobi is seeking a General Foreman responsible for scheduling, coordinating, and supervising the technical work of all site operatives within the Estate in Nairobi. This critical diplomatic facilities job in Kenya requires a Diploma/Craft certificate in construction and a minimum of 5 years’ experience overseeing technical works and managing technical projects. The Foreman will ensure all work is delivered safely, on time, and within budget, jointly line managing the Technical Works Group (TWG) (plumbers, electricians, carpenters, masons) and acting as the first point of contact for customer complaint resolution.

Maintaining the safety, functionality, and high technical standards of this estate relies heavily on expert facilities management and direct supervision of multi-skilled technical teams (TWG), ensuring compliance with UK and Kenyan building and safety regulations.


Role Overview

The General Foreman provides day-to-day on-site oversight, scheduling all technical work, and managing equipment and materials. Key duties include conducting detailed property surveys to scope works for the Forward Maintenance Register (FMR), supervising and engaging external contractors, coordinating with the Admin Officer on job allocations, and actively ensuring work is completed in compliance with best practice Health & Safety standards across the entire estate.


Roles and Responsibilities

  • Supervision and Scheduling: Provide day-to-day oversight of work; schedule projects to ensure timely delivery; guide the TWG team on priorities; jointly line manage the TWG staff (plumbers, electricians, carpenters, masons).
  • Property Surveys & FMR: Conduct proactive surveys of properties, detailing scope of works, estimated timeframes, staffing requirements, and bill of materials; escalate larger works to the FMR for funding.
  • Customer Service: Act as the first point of contact for customer complaint resolution through the Corporate Services Helpdesk (CSHelpdesk).
  • Contractor Management: Set out the program of works for contractors, schedule site visits for tendering, hold suppliers accountable to agreed timelines and quality, and spot check contractor work quality.
  • Health & Safety: Ensure all work is completed in compliance with best practice Health & Safety standards; actively participate as a representative on the BHC Health & Safety committee.
  • Line Management: Recognise good performance and guide line managers on swift and responsive actions for poor performance or disciplinary issues within the technical team.
  • Inspections: Conduct joint end-of-posting and arrival checks with diplomatic staff to highlight defects or features.

Essential Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Experience: Minimum 5 years’ experience overseeing technical works and management of technical projects.
  • Education: Diploma/Craft certificate or degree in construction from a reputable institution.
  • Management: Proven Project Management Experience and Line Management Experience/Team Leadership.
  • Technical: Certificate in Masonry, Carpentry, Generator Maintenance, and/or general works.
  • License: Clean driving record with valid Kenyan driving licence.
