The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is seeking an Architect Intern for the Facilities Management & Transportation Section in Nairobi. This demanding UN internship in Kenya is open to candidates currently enrolled in or recently graduated with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Architecture or a related field. The Intern will gain hands-on experience by assisting with design drawings, making sketches, developing 3D conceptual designs, conducting research on building codes and standards, and preparing various technical documents and reports for the Facilities Management team.

Role Overview
The Architect Intern will support the Associate Logistics Officer on the A-J Project (New Build and FWS). Key responsibilities include practical design work (sketches, 3D conceptual designs), preparing technical documentation (CAD drawings, diagrams, reports), conducting research on materials and compliance standards (building codes), and assisting with site visits to monitor construction progress. The role demands attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and a willingness to learn about sustainable development ideals.
Key Responsibilities
- Design & Drafting: Assist with design drawings, make sketches, and complete basic design projects; revise existing drawings as required.
- Conceptual Design: Generate design development ideas and develop 3D conceptual designs for new builds and facilities upgrades.
- Technical Documentation: Prepare contracts, technical reports, CAD drawings, and diagrams.
- Research & Compliance: Conduct research on various building materials, lighting fixtures, and products; research and verify adherence to relevant building codes and standards.
- Site Monitoring: Visit worksites to monitor construction progress and ensure execution aligns with planned specifications.
- Presentation Material: Prepare design mock-ups and color boards for project presentations.
- Administration: Perform necessary administrative work and analytical tasks, and attend project staff meetings.
Qualifications/Special Skills
- Eligibility: Must meet one of the following: enrolled in a graduate program; enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree (Bachelor’s minimum); or graduated with a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD (or equivalent) in Architecture or other related fields.
- Experience (Required): Experience in standard computer software applications (e.g., AutoCAD, SketchUp, MS Office Suite) is required. (Professional work experience is not required for the UN Internship Programme).
- Competencies: Ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds; keen interest in the work of the United Nations is desirable.
