Senior House Officer – ICU/HDU

Role Overview

Critical care demands calm execution, strong clinical judgement, and disciplined teamwork. In this ICU/HDU role, you will assess and manage patients, participate in daily rounds, support procedures within competence, and contribute to quality improvement and patient safety—under supervision of the Critical Care Consultant.

Key Responsibilities

  • Access, assess, and manage ICU/HDU patients under appropriate supervision
  • Participate in daily multidisciplinary rounds in ICU & HDU per schedule/rota
  • Provide clinical instruction and appraisal support to junior medical staff, with consultant oversight
  • Perform and/or supervise critical care procedures within competence under supervision
  • Examine patients, order and interpret investigations, develop care plans, and update patients/families/providers under supervision
  • Support consultation outside critical care units by providing assessment, management, and triage advice as directed
  • Participate in review and development of policies and procedures aligned to best practice
  • Support integration of patient care activities by collaborating with the wider clinical team
  • Promote meticulous resource use; reduce errors and waste through improved practice
  • Participate in departmental research, academic activity, quality improvement, and patient safety initiatives
  • Support clinical instruction of students, interns, and residents as assigned
  • Participate and occasionally present in weekly Morbidity and Mortality meetings for critical care
  • Pursue continuous competency development; seek feedback from Critical Care Consultants and act on it
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Critical Care Medical Director
  • Support departmental and sectional teamwork requirements as needs arise

Qualifications

  • MBChB (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery)
  • Registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board
  • Valid Advanced Life Support certification (ACLS or above)
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certification
  • Successful internship completion plus at least 1 year post-internship experience
  • Demonstrated competency with hospital equipment and critical care environment tools
  • Strong communication skills and ability to function effectively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and ethical clinical practice
  • Cultural sensitivity, respect for diversity, and ability to adhere to strict deadlines
  • Demonstrated constructive management of medical errors
