Job Description
HIAS is seeking six Protection Monitors to identify and document human rights violations and protection risks affecting LGBTQI+ refugees and asylum seekers. This role involves survivor-centered community monitoring to address risks such as discrimination, violence, and exclusion from services. Monitors act as a vital community link, conducting safe check-ins and referring individuals to legal, health, and mental health services. The position requires a high degree of confidentiality and a trust-based approach to support vulnerable individuals in urban refugee settings.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor, verify, and safely document human rights violations affecting LGBTQI+ refugees
- Conduct confidential community visits and check-ins to identify risks like harassment, eviction, or arrest
- Collect and analyze protection data using standardized tools and the KOBO platform
- Refer clients to specialized services, including Legal, GBV, Health, and Livelihood support
- Support emergency assistance initiatives, including safety planning and emergency shelter placements
- Facilitate community awareness sessions on refugee rights and access to justice
- Provide language interpretation and cultural mediation during outreach and clinic activities
- Build trusting relationships with peer leaders, local authorities, and service providers
Qualifications & Experience
- O-Level education certificate (minimum); relevant technical training is preferred
- Minimum of three months of work experience, ideally within an NGO setting
- Previous experience in refugee protection or assistance is a distinct advantage
- Demonstrated sensitivity and commitment to working with LGBTQI+ populations
- Proficiency in using digital data collection tools like KOBO
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to maintain strict confidentiality
- Ability to provide cultural and language mediation in a diverse community context
