Job Description

Programme Development Manager (Maternity Cover)

Role Overview

Are you a strategist who believes that local communities should lead the way in peacebuilding and justice? We are looking for a creative program architect to step in and lead our design efforts, focusing on turning partner-led ideas into successful funding applications. You’ll spend your time facilitating workshops, coaching country teams on donor policies, and drafting complex theories of change that challenge traditional, top-down aid structures. If you enjoy the balance of high-level strategic thinking and the detailed work of budgeting and risk management, your leadership will help us secure the flexible funding needed to drive real community change.

Key Responsibilities

  • You will lead the co-design of new programs alongside local partners, ensuring their voices shape every proposal and budget.
  • You’ll be the primary writer for high-stakes funding applications, crafting narratives and MEL frameworks that reflect our mission.
  • Your day-to-day includes researching non-traditional donors and foundations to diversify our funding base.
  • You will advocate for equitable partnerships, pushing for more flexible terms and direct funding for local civil society.
  • You’ll mentor country teams, helping them navigate the complexities of donor requirements from GAC, the EU, and UN agencies.
  • You will represent Saferworld at international seminars, sharing our approach to locally led peacebuilding.

Qualifications

  • You have demonstrable experience in co-designing international development programs, specifically in conflict zones.
  • You are a pro at writing successful proposals and building complex budgets from the ground up.
  • You have a strong network and an even stronger understanding of donors like Sida, FCDO, and the EU.
  • You are comfortable managing relationships remotely and facilitating collaborative design workshops.
  • You believe in non-hierarchical processes and have a background in peacebuilding or justice sectors.
