The Geothermal Development Company (GDC) is seeking a Principal Insurance Officer to provide technical leadership and management for the company’s comprehensive insurance program in Nairobi. This critical insurance and risk management job in Kenya requires a Master’s degree, a Bachelor of Commerce (Insurance) or equivalent, and a minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role. The Officer will manage the entire insurance lifecycle, including policy organization, claims handling, procurement planning, and regulatory compliance.

Role Overview
The Principal Insurance Officer is responsible for ensuring effective coverage for all company assets and personnel through sound policies and procedures. Key duties include leading the development of insurance policies, preparing detailed procurement plans and tender documents, verifying policy compliance, managing claims files for expedited settlement, and providing technical guidance on regulatory compliance related to insurance matters within the energy sector.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Leadership: Provide technical leadership in the development of sound insurance and regulatory affairs policies and procedures.
- Policy Management: Organize the company’s entire insurance portfolio, providing quarterly reports on each policy, compliance status, and relevant issues.
- Claims Handling: Ensure the follow-up and timely closing of all insurance claims; liaise with department heads on company claims documentation and staff on personal injury claims.
- Procurement: Prepare the annual insurance procurement plan and develop necessary insurance tender documents in close liaison with the Procurement Department.
- Policy Verification: Verify policy documents and risk notes to confirm that all GDC requirements are met, and vet all insurance payments prior to processing.
- Regulatory Compliance: Provide technical guidance on implementing strategies to ensure the company complies with applicable insurance regulations and changing government legislation.
- Risk Coordination: Coordinate with external consultants for risk surveys and insurance claims investigations.
- Budget Monitoring: Monitor the insurance budget performance and advise management on optimization and financial planning.
Qualifications & Experience
- Experience: A minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience, including at least 3 years in a supervisory role.
- Education: A Master’s Degree in a relevant field and a Bachelor of Commerce (Insurance), Social Science, or equivalent from a recognized institution.
- Professional: Membership of IIPK/SCII or any other relevant professional body is required.
- Training: Completion of a supervisory course lasting not less than two (2) weeks.
- Competencies: Excellent negotiation, analytical, and critical thought processes, strong leadership, and proficiency in computer applications.
