Pharmaceutical Technologist, Main Pharmacy
Role Overview
Accuracy, speed, and patient safety are the non-negotiables in this pharmacy role. You will dispense, compound, counsel, document interventions, and maintain stock integrity while collaborating closely with clinicians and nursing teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive and verify prescriptions; dispense medications within approved standards and procedures
- Contact the physician immediately for inaccuracies or illegible prescriptions; document errors and communicate to relevant teams
- Verify expiry dates before dispensing and maintain expiry tracking lists
- Confirm label accuracy for every medication (patient name, drug, quantity, directions)
- Compound extemporaneous preparations and mix intravenous medications according to procedures
- Counsel patients on medication administration and device use to support wellness and recovery
- Process drug credits (receive/return/update) in the system in a timely manner
- Deliver ward discharges to patients where applicable
- Communicate out-of-stock and non-stock items promptly; propose alternatives or arrange ordering
- Observe environmental health and safety requirements for handling, storage, and dispensing
- Record and report interventions, medication errors, near misses, adverse events, queries, complaints, and incidents
- Conduct daily random medication checks and monitor variance levels in assigned satellites
- Compile daily satellite reports and perform regular stock-take exercises
- Report special indicators as assigned and maintain an updated personal drug knowledge database
- Participate in continuous professional development and keep up with pharmaceutical developments
Qualifications
- Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology from a recognised institution
- Valid practising licence from the Pharmacy and Poisons Board
- At least 1 year experience in a busy facility (hospital experience preferred)
- Computer literacy and strong documentation discipline
- Ability to communicate effectively with medical professionals
- Strong customer service skills; empathetic approach to patients of all ages
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams
- Cultural sensitivity and commitment to Continuous Medical Education (CME)
