Nurse – Midwife — International Rescue Committee (IRC) (Kenya)

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is seeking a Registered Nurse – Midwife for its maternity unit in IRC supported Health facilities in Kenya. This vital NGO healthcare job requires a Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse (KRCHN)/Kenya Registered Midwife (KRM), Registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) with valid practicing license, and More than 2 years of clinical maternity ward experience in a busy facility. The Midwife will be responsible for the day-to-day implementation of Maternal and Neonatal Care, conducting Antenatal Care (ANC), Labor and Delivery Management (using a partograph), and leading Postnatal Care, ensuring adherence to Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) and Respectful Maternity Care standards.

The Nurse-Midwife is crucial for ensuring quality of care for mothers and newborns, participating in audits (MPDSR), and managing emergency obstetric and neonatal complications.


Role Overview

The Nurse – Midwife provides full-scope specialized care in the maternity unit, operating within a multi-disciplinary team (MDT). Key duties involve providing high quality nursing care during admissions/delivery, monitoring labor progression (partograph/labour care guide), conducting normal deliveries, managing early identification of obstetric and neonatal complications, processing patient referral documents, and ensuring meticulous clinical record documentation in the EMR (Electronic Medical Records) system and Ministry of Health reports.


Key Responsibilities

  • Maternal & Perinatal Care: Able to offer high quality nursing care during admissions, hospital stay, and discharging mothers/newborns; Daily assessment, early identification of complications, and sound clinical judgment calls.
  • Antenatal Care (ANC): Conducting regular check-ups, monitoring vital signs, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, and providing health education on nutrition and birth preparedness.
  • Labor & Delivery: Monitoring the progress of labour using a partograph/labour care guide; conducting normal vaginal deliveries, AMSTEL (Active Management of Third Stage of Labour), and performing neonatal resuscitation.
  • Postnatal Care: Monitoring mothers for signs of complications (haemorrhage, infection); educating mothers on breastfeeding and post-partum family planning.
  • Emergency & Referral: Early Identification of obstetric and neonatal complications and instituting timely interventions; Able to process patient referral documents and accompany patients during referral.
  • Quality & Safety: Adhering to Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) measures; participating in MPDSR audits and quality improvement activities; ensuring Respectful Maternity Care.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Education: Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse (KRCHN)/Kenya Registered Midwife (KRM) from a recognized Nursing Training Institution.
  • Experience: More than 2 years of clinical maternity ward experience in a busy facility. Previous work experience in a limited resource setting is an added advantage.
  • Registration: Registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya with valid practicing license.
  • Skills: Excellent clinical acumen (Certificate in EMONC training), critical thinking, communication (using SBAR during handover/referral), and a compassionate, patient-centered approach. Ability to speak local language will be an added advantage. Female candidates are encouraged to apply.
