Laboratory Intern
Overview
Syngenta Flowers is offering a unique internship opportunity at the East Africa Plant Pathology Laboratory. This role is designed for an enthusiastic scientist looking to gain hands-on experience in plant disease diagnostics, specifically focused on ornamental flower crops. You will work within a team of experienced personnel to support research projects, conduct quality checks, and validate test protocols that are essential for maintaining flower health and site-wide biosecurity.
Responsibilities
- Technical Testing: Conduct laboratory tests, including samples reception, analysis, and result interpretation using molecular and serological methods.
- Diagnostics: Gain proficiency in using technical instruments such as thermocyclers for PCR and equipment for ELISA testing.
- Project Support: Work on assigned research tasks both independently and collaboratively to improve flower health management.
- Data Management: Compile and record experimental data for documentation and report preparation.
- Safety & Compliance: Adhere strictly to General Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and chemical Safety Data Sheet (SDS) procedures.
- Protocol Validation: Assist in the development, validation, and verification of effective test protocols for plant pathogens.
Qualifications
- Academic: Bachelor’s degree in Plant Science, Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, or Agronomy.
- Experience: Minimum of one year of laboratory experience specifically running PCR and ELISA tests.
- Technical Skills: Familiarity with common plant pathogens and proficient use of technical laboratory equipment.
- Soft Skills: High attention to detail, ability to follow complex protocols accurately, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
- Tools: Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office.
