Junior Accountant – Supermarket

Role Overview

This role keeps the store’s numbers honest and usable: daily reconciliations, POS-to-bank alignment, supplier controls, inventory checks, payroll support, and tax compliance. You will work close to operations, where small misses become big losses.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts and bank statements
• Reconcile daily store transactions and align bank activity to reported sales
• Reconcile POS reports with actual cash, card receipts, and mobile payments
• Prepare and monitor daily bank deposits and confirm they match recorded sales
• Manage invoices, payments, and day-to-day transaction processing
• Manage petty cash for minor store expenses and urgent supplies
• Work with floor managers on stock takes and reconcile physical stock to system records
• Identify, report, and help reduce inventory discrepancies and losses
• Manage Accounts Payable by verifying supplier invoices against Goods Received Notes before payment
• Prepare monthly Profit & Loss statements, balance sheets, and cash flow reports
• Support budgets and forecasts and provide variance analysis where required
• Calculate and file VAT, sales tax, PAYE, and other statutory obligations
• Support payroll calculations for wages, overtime, and commissions for store staff
• Coordinate with internal or external auditors during annual reviews
• Handle other assigned accounting and finance tasks as required

Qualifications

• CPA Foundation / CPA I
• At least 2 years’ experience in a retail chain environment
• Proficiency in financial software and reporting tools
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• High integrity and strong control mindset
• Excellent organisation, time management, and attention to detail
• Adaptable and effective in fast-paced operations
