Job Description
The British High Commission Nairobi is seeking a Head of Digital to sit within the Kenya and Somalia Communications Team in Nairobi. This critical international relations and communications job in Kenya requires experience in the media sector or communications, digital skills (photography, videography, editing), and management experience. The Head of Digital will lead and drive all digital outputs across the social media and internal communications channels for both the British High Commission Nairobi and the British Embassy Mogadishu, and serve on the crisis roster.

The British High Commission in Nairobi and the British Embassy in Mogadishu represent the UK Government’s interests in Kenya and Somalia, respectively. The Communications Team is vital for delivering creative and impactful digital outputs, managing the UK Government’s website content, and providing media leadership during crises across the region.
Role Overview
The Head of Digital will lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive channel and content strategy for seven social media channels. Key responsibilities include managing a digital team, ensuring high-quality content capture and editing, maintaining the UK Government’s website content (GOV.UK), conducting regular monitoring and evaluation of channels (using analytics to track engagement and sentiment), and leading improvements to digital skills within the broader communications team.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Digital Strategy & Content: Create and implement a channel and content strategy for seven social media channels (Nairobi and Mogadishu), identifying opportunities for creative and impactful digital outputs.
- Team Management: Manage the digital team (including two digital communications assistants), ensuring timely delivery of high-quality digital outputs, content capture, and video editing.
- GOV.UK Management: Coordinate publishing and updates to content on the UK Government’s website (GOV.UK), ensuring a high standard and adherence to the style guide.
- Monitoring & Evaluation: Conduct regular monitoring and evaluation of all seven social channels and content, analyzing engagement rates and audience sentiment, and producing quarterly reports for senior leadership.
- Skills Development: Track and lead improvements to digital skills within the broader communications team (7-8 people), identifying skills gaps and upskilling colleagues.
- Crisis Management: Act as media manager on the crisis roster, providing sound media leadership during times of crisis.
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Manage relationships with partner national and regional communications leads to collaborate on digital outputs and increase reach.
- Procurement: Manage the extensive inventory of communications equipment, including procurement responsibilities.
Essential Qualifications, Skills and Experience
- Experience: Experience working in the media sector or communications.
- Skills: Strong digital communications skills, including photography, videography, and editing software.
- Technical: Monitoring and evaluation skills, particularly in relation to META and X platforms.
- Management: Management experience is essential; excellent written and oral communication skills, and high proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Knowledge: Knowledge of the social media landscape in Somalia, Kenya, and the region.
