Job Description

Economic Recovery Officer

Role Overview

Economic stagnation in Mandera and cross-border regions requires a focused intervention that goes beyond temporary aid to build long-term market resilience. We are looking for an officer who can solve the problem of limited income opportunities by identifying and facilitating market-based solutions for smallholder farmers, youth, and women. Your role is to bridge the gap between local producers and broader market opportunities, using the Market Systems Development (MSD) approach to fix broken value chains. By mentoring beneficiaries and fostering collaboration between consortium partners and local authorities, you will help create a sustainable economic foundation in some of the most challenging environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct participatory assessments to resolve barriers to income generation and community resilience.
  • Identify and implement market-sector interventions specifically tailored for smallholder farmers and micro-enterprises.
  • Draft technical manuals and lead training sessions to solve gaps in financial literacy and business management.
  • Facilitate partnerships between market players and the BORESHA consortium to ensure program synergy.
  • Monitor budget utilization to identify and address spending gaps within the project workplan.
  • Document lessons learned to ensure future project designs solve recurring economic hurdles in the region.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Agribusiness Management, Agricultural Economics, or Business Administration.
  • At least 3 years of experience implementing livelihoods or income-generating projects, preferably with an NGO.
  • Specific experience working in Mandera County or within cross-border programming contexts.
  • Solid understanding of the Market Systems Development (MSD) approach and VSLA models.
  • Capability to work independently while prioritizing multiple field-based tasks.
