Communications Officer — IMPACT Initiatives (Nairobi)

IMPACT Initiatives is seeking a Communications Officer to lead external communication efforts for the UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNSRIP) mandate in Nairobi. This critical NGO communication job in Kenya requires a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or International Relations, and At least 5 years of progressive experience in strategic communications, media relations, or advocacy (preferably with a human rights/UN organization). The Officer will develop the overall communication strategy, manage social media platforms, build relationships with media representatives, and lead the planning and execution of awareness raising campaigns focused on Indigenous Peoples’ rights.

The Communications Officer role is vital for enhancing the mandate’s visibility, ensuring consistency in messaging, managing crisis communication, and building a global network of partners to amplify the reach of the UNSRIP’s reports and engagements.


Role Overview

The Communications Officer provides strategic planning and hands-on content creation for a high-profile human rights mandate. Key duties involve developing the annual communication strategy and agenda, ensuring adherence to the UNSRIP mandate’s style and guidelines, building relationships with media representatives and Indigenous Peoples’ organizations, preparing and distributing press releases and articles, managing and curating content for social media platforms, and handling logistics and promotion for events and awareness raising campaigns.


Key Responsibilities

  • Strategy & Planning: Develop the overall communication strategy and annual agenda, specifying objectives, target groups, and relevant platforms/languages.
  • Content Creation: Develop engaging and informative content for various platforms; contribute to press releases, articles, and website content; ensure consistency and adherence to UNSRIP mandate guidelines.
  • Media Relations & Advocacy: Build and maintain relationships with media representatives; handle media inquiries and coordinate interviews; build a network of Indigenous Peoples’ organizations and NGOs to amplify reach.
  • Social Media Management: Manage and curate content for social media platforms; monitor online conversations and engage with the audience.
  • Campaigns & Events: Lead in the planning and execution of awareness raising campaigns; Plan and coordinate events, webinars, and outreach advocacy campaigns.
  • Crisis Management: Identify opportunities for media coverage and manage crisis communication when necessary.
  • Coordination: Collaborate and coordinate with members of the UNSRIP team, graphic designers, and photographers.

Qualifications

  • Experience: At least 5 years of progressive experience in strategic communications, media relations, public information, or advocacy (preferably with a human rights institution, UN agency, or development organization).
  • Strategy: Proven ability to design and implement communication and visibility strategies for advocacy or development initiatives.
  • Digital Skills: Hands-on experience managing social media platforms, digital campaigns, and online community engagement. Experience in graphic design, photography, or basic video production will be an asset.
  • Knowledge: Experience and familiarity with Indigenous Peoples’ rights, human rights, or governance issues in the region is a strong advantage.
  • Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, International Relations, Media Studies, or a related field.
