Chief Executive Officer (CEO) — Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya (APDK) (Nairobi)

The Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya (APDK) is seeking a dynamic and experienced Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Trust Secretary to lead its National Office in Nairobi. This executive NGO leadership job in Kenya requires a Master’s degree in Business Management, Strategic Management, or a related field, and a minimum of 5–10 years of senior leadership experience (Director or VP level). The CEO will serve as the public face of APDK, driving strategic leadership, securing significant grants and major gifts (fundraising), overseeing operational excellence, and acting as the primary advocate for the rights and welfare of people with disabilities in Kenya.

APDK is a compassionate and visionary non-profit organization dedicated to transforming the lives of people with disabilities through empowerment, advocacy, and service delivery. As the most senior manager, the CEO is the primary link between the Board of Directors and the organization’s mission, ensuring financial sustainability and operational excellence across its national office and branch network.


Role Overview

The CEO is a multi-faceted leader responsible for Strategy, Operations, and External Relations. Key duties include serving as a strategic advisor to the Board, overseeing all departmental aspects (programs, finance, HR), leading aggressive fundraising efforts to achieve annual income goals, acting as the primary external representative for advocacy with government/media, and inspiring a culture of accountability and compassion across the senior leadership team and staff.


Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership: Serve as a key advisor to the Board of Directors, formulating policies, and translating the vision into actionable programs and multi-year growth plans.
  • Operational Management: Oversee all aspects of the organization (administration, programs, finance, HR, facilities), ensuring prudent management of resources and adherence to legal/regulatory guidelines.
  • Fundraising & Resource Mobilization: Lead and drive fundraising efforts, including identifying and cultivating relationships with major donors, development partners, and philanthropic stakeholders to ensure financial sustainability.
  • Public Relations & Advocacy: Act as the primary external representative of APDK, engaging with government representatives and the media to advocate for the rights and welfare of people with disabilities.
  • Team Leadership: Inspire and manage the senior leadership team and staff across the national office and branch network, fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, and compassion.
  • Partnerships: Build and maintain strategic partnerships with other NGOs, businesses, and government entities.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience: A minimum of 5–10 years of senior leadership experience, preferably in a Director or Vice President role.
  • Fundraising: Vast experience in fundraising, including securing and managing grants, donations, and major gifts.
  • Education: A Master’s degree in Business Management, Strategic Management, Public Administration, Finance, or a related field. A technical degree in a relevant industry is highly desirable.
  • Sector Knowledge: Direct experience working with or for people with disabilities is highly desirable.
  • Skills: Exceptional communication, public speaking, and interpersonal skills; proven proficiency in financial management, budgeting, and fiscal oversight.
  • Ethics: Proven ability to build and maintain a spotless personal reputation and act as a professional representative.
